I’m not sure why everything starts over a bottle of wine at the Granby.
‘We need more socks in our lives. We should do a year of socks; you know, design a pair of socks every month for a year.’
‘We can do more than that! Let’s make it so we have 18 pairs in total – we’ll design six each individually and six together!’
‘Oo-er, now you’re talking!’
So there you have it.

Good plan!
This is a great idea. I’ve only just started knitting again after a 10 year break. I’ve finished my first pair of socks = not brilliant but perfect as bedsocks. I’m eager to do some more so I’ll take on your challenge – although 18 PAIRS…not sure I’ll keep up!
beautiful socks! Thanks so much for the patterns.
Thank You for the patterns. I have saved two of them. It will be a challenge for me to knit these patterns. I will not be doing 18 pairs but maybe I could plan about half that many, say 9 pairs.
Thank you!
I was hoping to make this a year of (knitting) socks.
Thanks for some great incentive to get at it.
Maybe with all that practice I’ll be able to design some next year …
Thank you for these beautiful patterns.
What gorgeous designs! I love doing socks. I can try out complex colorwork and patterns and actually get the project finished.
Question: What cast on do folks use? I have “significant” legs and need something very elastic.
Thanks in advance.
Very nice! I love socks! They travel while knitting them and wearing them. These are lovely patterns and I am thrilled to add them to my list of must do. If only I could knit a pair every week I would be able to make all the ones currently on that list.
thank you!
Hey Penny Reese I normally cast on knit wise rather than purl wise as it gives a bit more. I think I tend to cast on too tight anyway so this way it is a lot easier to control your tension.
Great patterns, thanks a lot. Especially love the singing in the rain ones!
hi Lou
Congratulations on being “Sock of the Day”
glad that your talent is being recognised
You have inspired me to knit again this weekend

Hello, just worn my first pair of hand knitted sox so these patterns look great. Can’t believe how warm and comfortable knitted sox are.
gorgeous socks! i have court line on the needles!
what pattern is the upper left aqua sock photographed with the same color Aethenoth sock? ( also in your banner)
many, many thanks!
Thats Singing in the Rain,
Glad your are enjoying the socks! We really enjoy designing them and are so amazed when people actually cast a pair on!
For Penny Reese,
I usually use a needle 2 sizes larger than what I will be knitting with and use a twisted German cast on. Also if you need a bit extra room you can add a few extra stitches to the legs (be sure the amount will work with the pattern or just use the extra stitches for the top ribbing) or use a size larger needle for the legs, changing to the correct size a few inches before the ankle. I usually use a US #2 (2.75mm)for the leg and change down to a 2.5mm for the ankle and a 2.25 for the foot. Good luck!
Hi Lou and Emmm.
I love your socks. You two are very creative.
Thank you for sharing your sock patterns with us all.
I’ve made baby/little socks but never any for me… now I’ll have to give it a try.
Thanks again.

I have a construction question for Lou the person. How did you come up with the toe decreases for your “Singing in the Rain” socks? It’s not the type of toe decrease I’m used to seeing. I’m used to seeing: k to last 3 stitches of needle 1, k2tog, k1, k1 on needle 2, ssk, knit to end, knit to last 3 stitches of needle 3, k2tog, k1, k1 on needle 4 ssk, k to end. I was about halfway through the toe before I noticed that I was making more than 2 decreases. Sometimes I’m not the most observant person.
Hi Walter knitty!
So sorry I have taken so long to get back to you!
The toe decreases are totally down to the way that the feather and fan pattern sits. I played about with the decreases for ever and managed to come up with this way which worked by surprise. I hope it is just as good as the conventional method! Is it working alright for you? It will seem strange but trust me and if I have written the pattern up properly it will all work out in the end. Let me know how it is going!
So so so happy you are knitting them!!! How have you found the pattern other than the toe issue?
I do love these sock patterns! Thank you so much for sharing them. I’m having trouble downloading Court-line. I keep getting a message that says the file is corrupted and cannot be fixed. Can you help???
Many thanks.

Bo Peep Gloves!
These are a great pattern! Unfortunately I’m not the best at knitting so my mum is doing it for me. We have a question with the Keyhole stitching. It says on row three to repeat from *, but we are unable to locate the *. Could you tell us where it is please so I can wear these cute babies!!
Thank you!!!
Tams
your loop to the May socks is broken, I can’t get the second pair.
Hi, there doesnt seem to be a problem. Can you try again and let me know if you are still having trouble.
Thanks
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful patterns !
Hi, The download for the Norfolk Ramblers sock pattern does not seem to work.
Wonderfull socks and wonderfull idea :)
I love the singing in the rain sock. But where can I find out how to do the two stitch patterns when you start the leg? It isn’t written on the pattern. Thanks
Hi Jill,
If it is the droplet lace pattern you are looking for, it should be on page 4 of the download as a chart. Did all of the four pages download for you?
There is also some errata for singing in the rain, I will get all of this changed on the pattern and a new editied version put up soon, but for the moment here it all is!
The Droplet Lace chart is back to front, so read from left to right:
Round 3 of the Droplet Lace written instructionsshould read the same as Round 11.
The Heel Flap – should be worked on needle 1 (the first needle) not needle 3 (so that you start with the right side facing).
The toe shaping was nearer to 2 inches than 3 inches, which she said might just be her gauge.
And at the end of the toe shaping there are 12 stitches on each needle, 24 in total – it read as if you’re supposed to end up with 12 in total which could be confusing.
Hope this helps!
O, O, joy and frumptiousness!!! I came across your website and am delirious w/delight. I am returning to knitting and crocheting after a hunnert/n two year relapse and am thrilled to find all your sock ‘recipes’.
I need warm, w i i i i d e socks for evenings to keep my cramping feet from cramping terrible. I can hardly wait to make this pair…and once they are finished and I am confidant I can knit again…I shall attempt many more.
I could use a “less narrowing” hint for the toe of the sock. I mean, my feet are really wiiiiiiiide. Thank you, thankyou.
Lovely socks! Brilliant designs. You’ve given me a year, plus, of patterns. Now I’ll have to go stash diving for the perfect yarns. But how will I choose which to do first? Perhaps, since it is October, I’ll start with the most recent (love the name-Dawn of the Dead!) and work back. Thank you so much for these patterns!
These are the most beautifully designed socks: decorative patterns, detail in the finishing of toes and heels, and the colors chosen are gorgeous. And to think one can download them directly! I’ve not done socks before, but this site is enough to tempt me. I’ll start with one, not a year’s worth; it will be ‘Sinusoida.’ The mathematics of it appeals to me.
Hi, I wanted to do the day of the dead socks and i know that you guys got the yarn customed dyed. I do really love that yarn though and wish I could have it but the website its from is down at the moment. Is there any store or more common yarn that you think that would look best with this themed pattern??
Thanks for sharing all of these great patterns!
These socks are so beautiful! Such a fun idea to design all year!! Thanks for the great inspiration and eye candy!!!!
Just found your site…best april fools ever! Love your Bo Peep, although I haven’t attempted the pattern just yet. Can’t decide on a color… One of everything perhaps… :-)
Thank you for sharing these beautiful patterns.
